Brothers Edward & James started way back in 2010 with a hire fleet of just 15 vans! Working out of a wooden shed, they established the foundations of the business within York, quickly building up a strong reputation.
After running the hire business successfully for a few years, they added more and more vehicles to the fleet, in turn their customer base began to rapidly grow and they were inundated with requests to buy vans, not just to hire them.
Spotting the opportunity to grow, they began selling de-fleeted hire vans and other used vehicles to businesses in York and across the country. After a few months used vans was well established and quickly became a key part of the business.
After 12 months, Edward and James were ready for their next challenge and wanted to supply new vehicles through leasing contracts. After approaching some key manufactures and funders (who still work with Clapham Commercials to this day) they began helping businesses save thousands with vehicle leasing.
In 2021 Clapham Commercials opened the first site outside of York in Stockport, Greater Manchester with the simple aim of replicating the success found in York.
In 2023 a third site was added in Hull, offering the same buy – rent – lease model that’s integral to the business. Fingers crossed there’s more new locations to come…watch this space!

Can I customise the lease term to suit by businesses needs?
Yes, one of the biggest benefits of leasing is the agreement is completely customisable, so it can be tailored exactly to match your needs. The initial rental, length of contract, monthly and final payment amount can all be amended.
Do you offer both short-term and long-term van hire options?
Yes, we can offer terms from 12 months up to 5-years, so no-matter on how long you usually like to keep vehicles, we’re bound to have the right deal for you.
Is it possible to view or test drive your vans?
Yes, we always suggest coming to visit us especially if your close by as we have over 200+ vehicles in stock at anyone time. Our teams are on hand in York, Manchester & Hull to show you around a wide range of vehicles.
What documents do I need to provide for hiring or leasing a van?
For short-term rental we’ll just ask for your driving licence and that you’re over the age of 25. For long-term leasing, we’ll need a bit more information about you and your business, this only takes 5 minutes to collect with our simple online application form.
What finance options are available for purchasing a used van?
We’ve got a wide selection of used vehicles available at anyone time. They can be purchased outright or with hire purchase, in most cases a 20% VAT deposit is paid in advance and the vehicle is owned out-right upon making the final payment.
What is included in your van hire insurance?
When hiring a van with us for a day, week or month, you’ll be covered with our fully comprehensive insurance. This means if your unfortunate to have an accident, our insurance will cover the costs, but please note there is an £750 excess fee which you will be liable for as part of the rental agreement.
What is the process for leasing a van from your company?
We like to keep things as simple and know how important your time is. Following a quick talk about what you’re looking for, we’ll ask you to complete a form which takes around 5 minutes. With this information we’ll find match you with the best suited funder from our panel of lenders to ensure the process is as smooth and efficient as possible.
